The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center here at CRPIC made a strong finish to its 7th season with our dedicated volunteers filing about 750 returns for low and moderate income households! This important IRS-sponsored program seeks to help low to moderate income families and individuals file taxes for free and capture all tax benefits and credits for which they are eligible. The most beneficial is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which helps taxpayers reduce their tax liability and frequently get a refund. At our center, many households received a refund equivalent to a month’s rent or more! Since the average annual income of our tax clients is a little more than $20,000, a refund that could cover a month or more of rent is an enormous and financially stabilizing benefit.
We want to publically thank all of our dedicated volunteers who invested hours training to get certified to the Advanced level by the IRS so we could again provide the highest quality service to our community this year AND for the incredible number of hours and days you spent in our clinics preparing returns. Most of our preparers dedicate about 5 hours each week over the entire tax season or roughly 60 hours, equivalent to more than a 40 hour work week! Special thanks to the students at Babson College and graduate students from Bentley University; we greatly appreciate how hard it is to insert this big a commitment into already demanding academic schedules. To our community volunteers, many of whom have been with us for several years, you have the dedication, expertise, and community spirit that we cherish and that are the lifeblood of this annual service. THANK YOU ALL!!
