Whether you have a point-and-shoot or an SLR, this class will introduce you to your digital camera and the basic skills your inner shutterbug will need to create beautiful photos. The course explores camera functions and settings, what your camera does in automatic mode, and the hows and whys of changing settings. We will also introduce you to the basic rules of composition used by professionals. By the end of the course, you will be able to go beyond simple button pushing to create better photos. Downloading images from your camera to the computer, organizing and storing your photos, and online photo sites and sharing are also covered. 3DPH101: 3D Photography – Family Style

Celebrate the rebirth of 3D with this fun and funky family class. New display techniques and digital photography are making 3D easier than ever. So bring the kids and have a blast learning how to create, print, and show your own 3D photos. In the first class you will use disposable cameras we provide to build your own stereo-cameras and then go outside and photograph the world in 3D. In the second class, we’ll assemble our pictures using scissors and glue into viewable 3D images. You will also learn to use your ordinary digital camera to create 3D pictures. This class is appropriate for all curious photographers age 7 and up. Price includes one parent/child pair, 4 disposable cameras, and 3D viewing devices. OPH101:Outdoor Photography Along the Charles

This class combines two joyful things – being outdoors and taking photos. In this class, we will explore and photograph a variety of “photolicious” natural and urban environments along the Charles River. At each site, following a brief lecture, you will be challenges to use your camera to document and explore the environment. Learn more about the technical workings and settings of your camera, rules of composition, white balance, and framing and snapping cityscapes, landscapes, and natural elements. We never know exactly what we’ll encounter, making every class a new experience. The instructor provides lots of assistance in answering your individual questions and improving your personal skill set. Classes end with refreshments and student slide shows to review work and concepts.

IPH101: Indoor Photography

Have you noticed that your indoor photos aren’t nearly as good as those taken outside? Stop letting your camera make all the decisions and start getting better indoor shots! IN this class we will learn how to take dramatically better photos in low and artificial light. We will examine the role of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO and the use of tripods under low light conditions. We will explore using your camera’s built-in flash for “life-as-it-happens,” and external flash attachments for more professional but still portable shorts. We’ll also introduce you to simple, low-cost studio lighting set-ups you can duplicate yourself with things you may already own or can purchase inexpensively at Home Depot. You’ll get lots of attention from the instructor specific to your individual questions and problems. Last class ends with refreshments and a student slide show and discussion.

NPH101S: Night Photography – Intro

What could be more magical or possibly more romantic than a photo shoot at night? This class will introduce you to the special considerations and techniques of shooting at night and in low light conditions. We will meet at CRPIC and then walk as a group along Moody Street and the Charles River walkways. Along the way we will explore basic camera settings for nighttime, framing cityscapes and nighttime portraiture, techniques to reduce blur and streaking or how to use it as an artistic effect. Small groups allow the instructor to give personalized attention to students’ individual questions. At the end of the session there will be a student slide show and refereshments back in CRPIC’s labs. A tripod is recommended, but not required. Great as a one-time experience or as an intro to the longer course.

NPH101: Night Photography

Like the night itself, beauty and mystery surround nighttime photography. This class will help you rise to the unique challenges of low light outdoor photography and create your own beautiful images. Through a combination of field shoots and classroom work, we will demystify the tech side of the dark and get lots of hands-on experience with camera work including aperture, shutter speed and ISO, shadow and light, framing cityscapes and nighttime portraiture. Learn how to reduce blur and streaking or use it as an artificial effect. Classes will meet at CRPIC and the group will walk together along Moody Street and the Charles River during field shoots. Students must have a camera which is capable of manual exposure control and a tripod is recommended, but not required. Student slide show and discussion follow field trips.

VGD: Video Game Design

Children’s Technology Workshop (Ages 8-13)
Design your own video game and challenge your friends! Thsi program teaches students the fundamentals of object-oriented programming and video game design. Working with step-by-step instructions, students learn the programming environment while creating a fully working 2D game. Once the basics are learned in the workshop, students can create their own 2D and 3D games at home using Gamemaker software, available for purchase. A strict non-violence policy is enforced. MWH: Make-a-Movie Animation Wizards

Children’s Technology Workshop (Ages 7-13)
Get ready for the big screen! This class guides students through the creation of a short stop-motion film, such as Claymation or paper animation. Students work in small teams as they explore various animation techniques, and learn scripting; storyboarding; techniques of set and character creation; and the post-production process such as titles, transitions, and sounds. DM-CDE 100: Introduction to Computer Databases and Excel

This course provides an overall introduction to databases, how they have evolved over time, how they are being used across various industries and functional areas, how data is changing our decision-making processes. Registrants will use Excel to model, build, manage, and revise simple databases while learning basic structures, functions, and terminology. Course has online lectures with weekly lab assignments and projects. Registrants with prior technology experience may place out of this class after review and testing with the instructor.

DM-R 100: Introduction to Big Data Using R and RStudio

This is a lecture and heavily project-based course using R, a free programming language, and RStudio, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) used for statistical computing and graphics. R and RStudio are among the most popular programming languages and software environments with statisticians and data miners. This course concentrates on teaching: defining the data you are looking for; designing an effective search for the data; scraping data from the internet; manipulating the data; and reporting the data. Prerequisites: College Level Statistics and Introduction to Computer Databases and Excel.

DM-PP 100: Python Programming for Data Analysis

This course is a lecture and project-based course. Python, one of the most popular programming languages, allows data analysis using qualitative data such as social data, pictures, location, clustering, etc. It permits analyses using data from different software environments with adjustments. Group and individual projects will use data and media from several sources. Course also investigates concepts such as “broken window policing” and others in performing these kinds of analyses. There is a high demand for Python programmers across multiple industries and disciplines. Prerequisites: College Level Statistics, Introduction to Computer Databases and Excel. It is recommended that registrants have taken SQL Programming or have some experience with more quantitative languages and analyses.
